Cartographic Translations is a series of three dimensional textile sculptures highlighting the connection between land, cartography and identity.

This piece follows on from Cartographic Translations #1 and continues with themes inspired by ’Translations’, a play by Irish playwright Brian Freil The piece takes its colours from the 1829-41 OS map of Ireland, which they were in the process of making during the play. The topographic lines are cut into the layers of hand dyed fabric, reflecting the forceful representation of Irish landscape through English, not Irish. Parts of the actual map are used as layers, along with the fabric.
